Need further proof that the record industry is run by idiots? Upon handing in the tapes to this (their 4th) album, Wilco heard nothing from their former record company for 2 weeks and then it was a “thanks but no thanks”. How they must be kicking themselves now as this has turned out to be an absolute gem, picking up album of the year for every single review turned in so far… Hard not to pick up on the September 11 vibe (not just the album cover, but lyrics like “I assassin down the avenue” or “you have to learn how to die if you wanna be alive” (from ‘War On War’ no less), not to mention something about “the ashes of American flags”… such a return to long lost form that it fills my heart with pride!
